Children of God: The Identity No One Can Take From You

Introduction
We live in a generation that is deeply confused about identity. People search for who they are in social media, in the opinions of others, in professional success, or in physical appearance. And when those things fail — and they always do — people are left empty, lost, with no ground beneath their feet.
But the apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, writes these extraordinary words to the Christians in Rome: we are children of God. Not because of merit. Not because of performance. Not because we are good enough. But because God himself has declared it so, and his Spirit confirms that truth in the deepest part of our being.
This morning I want you to leave here with a certainty etched on your heart: your deepest identity is not your job, your relationship status, or your failures. Your identity is child of God. And that changes everything.

1. The Spirit Confirms Who You Are
Paul writes that "the Spirit himself testifies with our spirit." The Greek word used here — symmartyreo — means to bear witness together, like two voices singing the same note. The Holy Spirit does not offer this testimony from the outside in, like a distant proclamation. He does it with us, deep within our innermost being.
This is profoundly important. Your identity as God's child does not depend on how you feel this morning. It does not depend on whether you had a glorious quiet time or whether you stumbled during the week. The Spirit of God dwells in you and continues to speak to your spirit: "You are a son. You are a daughter. You belong to the Father."
Do you know those days when doubt comes knocking? When the enemy whispers: "Do you really think God wants you? After everything you've done?" It is precisely in those moments that we need to remember we have an inner witness more trustworthy than our feelings: the Holy Spirit himself. He does not lie. He does not change. And his voice says: "You are my child."

2. Sonship Transforms the Way You Live
There is an enormous difference between a slave and a son. The slave works out of fear. The son serves out of love. The slave obeys to avoid punishment. The son obeys because he knows the heart of his father.
Paul, in the verses just before this passage, had already said that "you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear" (v. 15). Many Christians, sadly, live out their faith with a slave mentality — always anxious, always trying to prove something to God, always afraid of not being enough.
But the son knows that the father's love is not earned — it is received. When you begin to live from your identity as a child of God, obedience no longer feels like a burden; it becomes a natural response to love. Prayer is no longer an obligation but a conversation with the Father. The church is no longer just an institution but the family you belong to.
Ask yourself today: are you living like a slave or like a son?

3. Children and Heirs: The Future Belongs to You
Verse 17 adds a dimension that should fill us with hope: "Now if we are children, then we are heirs." Sonship comes with an inheritance. Paul makes it clear: we are co-heirs with Christ.
Think about what that means. Everything that belongs to Christ — his glory, his kingdom, his eternal life — is shared with us. Not as beggars receiving scraps, but as legitimate children who inherit alongside the firstborn Son.
It is true that this same verse speaks of sharing in his sufferings as well. The Christian life is not without hardship. There are losses, there are struggles, there are dark nights. But those sorrows have a context: they are experienced by children on their way to an imperishable inheritance, in the company of a Father who never abandons his own.
Your current situation is not the final chapter of your story. You are an heir of God. The best is still to come.

Child of God. Three words that can completely change the way you get up tomorrow morning, the way you face the challenges of the week, the way you see yourself in the mirror.
Do not let the world, your past, or the enemy convince you of a lesser identity. The Holy Spirit dwells in you and declares today, with full authority: you are a child of God, and a co-heir with Christ.
