Christian Parents: The Mission That Starts at Home

We live in a generation where Christian parents feel, perhaps more than ever, the weight of raising children in the faith. The world enters our homes through screens, social media, and a culture that normalizes what the Bible calls sin. And many Christian families ask themselves, with genuine anguish: How do I pass on faith to my children in this world?
God's answer is not new. It was given over three thousand years ago to Moses, in the wilderness, before Israel entered the Promised Land — a land full of other gods and other voices. The principle is timeless: faith is passed on in the home, through parents, day after day, in the most ordinary moments of life.
Deuteronomy 6 is not merely a parenting tip. It is a divine command. And it begins, crucially, not with the children — but with the parents themselves. This is what we need to reflect on together this morning.

1. Faith Begins in the Hearts of Parents
Verse 6 is often overlooked: "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts." Before addressing the children, God addresses the parents. The order is clear: first the parent's heart, then the mouth that teaches.
We cannot give what we do not have. A parent who knows the Bible by heart but does not live it in their heart passes on religion, not faith. Children have an extraordinary sensor for authenticity. They can tell when their parents' faith is real or merely a role played on Sunday mornings.
The practical application is challenging: What is the condition of your heart today? Is your relationship with God alive, personal, and growing? Does God's Word dwell in you — not merely as knowledge, but as love, as obedience, as delight? The first step to being a faithful Christian parent is not signing your child up for youth group. It is getting on your knees before God and asking Him to let His Word dwell in you richly.

2. Teaching That Happens in Everyday Life
Verse 7 describes four moments: at home, along the road, at bedtime, and at waking. Notice what is absent from this list — it does not mention the temple, the priest, or a formal class. It mentions everyday life. The living room. The car. The bedroom.
God did not entrust the spiritual formation of children solely to religious institutions. He entrusted it to parents, in the ordinary hours of life. This does not diminish the Church — the Church is essential. But the Church cannot replace what only parents can do.
"Impress them" — the Hebrew word suggests repetition, persistence, like someone sharpening a blade. It is not a weekly sermon. It is a constant, natural conversation woven into life. It is talking about God when you watch a sunset. It is praying together before bed. It is opening the Bible at the breakfast table. It is answering honestly when your child asks: "Dad, why did God let that happen?"
Christian parents, you don't need to be a theologian. You need to be present, available, and honest. You need to live out your faith out loud, so your children can see it and hear it.

3. A Legacy That Spans Generations
This commandment in Deuteronomy 6 was not given in an easy situation. Israel was about to enter a world hostile to faith. God knew the cultural pressure would be intense. And His response was: build the next generation within the home.
When parents are faithful to this command, the impact spans generations. The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, acknowledging the faith "which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice" (2 Timothy 1:5). A faithful grandmother. A faithful mother. And a young pastor who shook the Mediterranean world with the Gospel.
Do not underestimate what God can do through a family that takes this commandment seriously. You may not see all the fruit today. But faithful sowing produces a certain harvest, in God's timing.
