Come to Me and I Will Give You Rest
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." — Matthew 11:28-30
Introduction
We are entering a season when many families take a break — summer vacation. It's a good time, long anticipated, well deserved. But before we talk about rest for the body, Jesus wants to speak to us about a deeper rest: rest for the soul.
Jesus did not say "come to me, all you who have it all figured out." He said: "come to me, all you who are weary and burdened." The invitation is aimed precisely at those who are exhausted — worn out from work, from worry, from chasing after things that never truly satisfy.
1. The Invitation Is for the Weary
There is a kind of weariness that a vacation cannot fix — the weariness of the soul. You can rest your body on a beach and still carry a heavy heart. Jesus does not simply promise physical relief; He promises "rest for your souls." That is the deepest rest there is, and only He can give it.
Before you plan your next vacation destination, ask yourself: have you come to Jesus with your weariness? Or are you still carrying it on your own, hoping that a couple of weeks away will heal what only He can cure?
2. A Gentle Yoke — Not the Absence of One
Jesus does not promise a life free of responsibility — He promises an easy yoke. The Christian life comes with commitments, with service, with calling. But Christ's yoke does not crush, because He carries it with you. The burden is light because you never carry it alone.
Many people live in a constant state of exhaustion because they try to carry on their own what God never intended them to carry alone. Rest begins the moment we hand over our weight to the One who is truly able to bear it.
3. Rest Is Also an Act of Faith
Stopping is hard for those who measure their worth by their productivity. But God Himself rested on the seventh day — not because He was tired, but to teach us the right rhythm of life. Rest is not laziness; it is trusting that the world keeps turning even when we stop, because God is in control.
Conclusion
If you are taking a break this summer, let it also be a time of drawing closer to God. Rest your body — but don't forget to bring your weary soul to Jesus. He promised it. And He keeps His promises.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, I come to You tired and, so often, weighed down by burdens I was never meant to carry alone. Teach me to rest in You — in body and in soul. May this season of rest also be a season of spiritual renewal. In Jesus' name, amen.
