Rest for Those Heading Into Vacation
Theme verse: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul." — Psalm 23:1-3
Objective
To help the group enter the vacation season with a biblical perspective on rest — not merely a change of scenery, but genuine restoration of the soul.
Icebreaker
When was the last time you experienced true rest — not just a vacation, but rest for your soul? What made it different?
Point 1: The Shepherd Who Makes Us Lie Down
David doesn't say "I decided to rest" — he says it is the Shepherd who makes him lie down in green pastures. Many times we need God to bring us to a stop, because on our own we simply don't know how to stop.
Question: This vacation season, are you allowing God to lead you into rest, or are you still resisting the pause?
Point 2: Still Waters, Not Rushing Ones
The shepherd leads "beside still waters" — not rushing torrents. There's a kind of vacation that brings more exhaustion than rest: trips packed with hurry, jam-packed schedules, endless scrolling on social media. God invites us to still waters.
Question: Do your vacations tend to look like still waters, or just another version of the daily rush?
Point 3: Restoration of the Soul
The heart of this psalm isn't the body — it's the soul. "He restores my soul" speaks of inward renewal, not merely physical rest. You can come back from vacation tanned and rested on the outside and still be spiritually depleted, if you haven't cared for your soul.
Question: What is one concrete thing you can do to care for your soul during this time of rest?
Point 4: I Shall Not Want
The confidence that "I shall not want" frees us from the anxiety of squeezing everything in, of missing out on nothing, of filling every day with activity. We can truly rest because we trust that God is already providing everything we need.
Question: Can you rest without guilt, trusting that God is still taking care of everything while you pause?
Weekly Challenge
During your vacation — or this week, if you're not traveling — set aside 15 minutes each day just to be with God. No agenda, no requests, just His presence. At the end of your vacation, ask yourself: did my soul rest as much as my body did?
Closing Prayer
Good Shepherd, make us lie down in green pastures. Lead us beside still waters in this season of rest. Restore our souls, not only our bodies. May we return from this time closer to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
