7 Keys to Keeping the Fire of the Spirit Alive
"For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you." — 2 Timothy 1:6
Icebreaker
Ask the group: "If you had to describe your spiritual fire this week as a flame — would it be a bonfire, a candle, or a barely glowing ember? Why?" Let 2–3 people share before moving on.
Teaching
In the Old Testament, the priest had one non-negotiable daily duty: to place fresh wood on the altar every morning so the fire would never go out (Leviticus 6:12–13). That fire didn't depend on the priest's mood — it depended on his obedience. The same is true for us today. Here are seven practical "logs" to keep the fire burning:
1. The Holy Spirit — Without Him, there is no fire to keep. He is the one who ignites it; our part is not to grieve Him (Ephesians 4:30).
2. The Word — Scripture is spiritual fuel. A Christian who doesn't regularly read the Bible is, without realizing it, slowly starving the fire.
3. God's Presence — Deliberately seeking to be in God's presence, not just talking about Him. His presence transforms what information alone never can.
4. Persistent Prayer — Not the occasional emergency prayer, but a continuous, stubborn conversation with God — like Hannah's in the temple (1 Samuel 1).
5. Wholehearted Worship — Worship even when you don't feel like it. Worship isn't always a response to the fire; it is often the very cause of it.
6. Dying to Self — Fire and ego cannot coexist. Where self rules, the Spirit withdraws.
7. Generosity — Sacrificial giving keeps the heart soft and open; holding back only hardens it.
