Serving Without the Spotlight
Theme verse: "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them… so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." — Matthew 6:1-4
Objective
To challenge young people to serve and do good without needing public recognition, likes, or applause.
Icebreaker
Have you ever done something good just so you could post about it on social media afterward? Be honest with yourself.
Point 1: The Temptation of the Stage
We live in a culture where everything is meant to be shown — what we eat, where we go, the good we do. Jesus warns us: if your motivation is to be seen, you've already received your reward (the like) — but you've lost something far greater.
Question: Have you ever felt like an act of kindness "lost its value" the moment you thought about posting it?
Point 2: What God Sees in Secret
There's a different kind of joy in doing good when no one else knows — just you and God. That joy doesn't depend on outside approval, which makes it far more stable and lasting.
Question: Have you ever done something good without telling anyone? How did that feel?
Point 3: Serving Where No One Is Watching
Helping out at home without being asked, showing kindness to someone who has no "influence," standing up for someone who's being left out — these acts, done without an audience, reveal who we truly are.
Question: What "invisible" act of service could you practice this week?
Point 4: The Reward You Can't See Yet
Jesus promises that the Father, who sees in secret, will reward you. That doesn't mean you'll never be recognized — it means you don't need to go looking for that recognition here and now. God sees everything, even when no one else does.
Question: Can you trust that God sees what you do, even when no one else knows?
Weekly Challenge
Do one act of kindness this week and don't tell anyone — don't post it either. Keep it just between you and God, and pay attention to how you feel.
Closing Prayer
Lord, teach us to serve without needing applause. May Your approval be enough for us. In Jesus' name, amen.
