Your Worth Is Non-Negotiable

Objective

To help young people recognize the moments when they're tempted to "trade away" their identity and values for approval, popularity, or relationships — and to choose what's truly worth holding onto.

Icebreaker

If you could change one thing about yourself just to be more popular, would you? Why or why not?

Point 1: Trades That Seem Small

Most of the time, the trade isn't dramatic — it's subtle: laughing at a joke you don't find funny just to fit in, changing your opinion to make someone happy, hiding your faith so you won't seem "different." But those small trades add up over time.

Question: Can you think of a "small trade" you've already made just to please someone else?

Point 2: The Price Tag You Don't See Up Front

Jesus asks what it profits a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul. Many of these trades feel free in the moment — but the cost shows up later: a loss of peace, of identity, of closeness with God.

Question: Have you ever felt that "hidden cost" after doing something just to please others?

Point 3: Relationships That Cost Too Much

Some friendships and relationships only survive if you give up who you are. A true friend doesn't ask you to bargain away your values just to stay by their side.

Question: Is there a relationship in your life where you feel like you have to "be someone else" in order to be accepted?

Point 4: What's Actually Worth Holding Onto

David refused to wear Saul's armor because it wasn't his own (1 Samuel 17:38–40) — he stayed true to himself, and he defeated Goliath his way. Being faithful to who God made you to be, even if it feels less "equipped" than everyone else, is always the right choice.

Question: What does it look like, in your everyday life, to stay true to the person God made you — instead of trying to imitate someone else?

Weekly Challenge

Identify one area of your life where you've been "trading" your identity for someone's approval. This week, make a conscious choice not to make that trade — even when it's hard.

Closing Prayer

Lord, give us the courage not to trade who we are for fleeting approval. Help us to value Your voice above everyone else's. In Jesus' name, amen.
