Outline: One Decision Can Change Generations
Theme: Decisions that reach across generations
Key Text: Matthew 1:5
"Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse."
---
Introduction
A decision made in a house on the wall of a condemned city. Rahab could never have imagined how far that night would reach.
---
1. The Decision Was Made Without Seeing the Outcome
Support: Joshua 2:12–13 — she asked for mercy before she knew Jericho would fall
No one decides with the full map spread out before them.
To develop: obeying without knowing the full scope of what you're stepping into.
2. The Decision Saved an Entire Household
Support: Joshua 6:23, 25 — father, mother, brothers, everything they had
The first circle of impact is always the family.
3. The Decision Produced a Redeemer
Support: Matthew 1:5 — Rahab is the mother of Boaz
Notice the symmetry: a Canaanite woman rescued from Jericho gives birth to the man who redeems a Moabite woman.
To develop: two foreign women in succession within the messianic line (see Ruth 4:13–17).
4. The Decision Reached David — and Christ
Support: Matthew 1:5–6 — Obed, Jesse, David; and the genealogy continues all the way to Jesus
Four generations later, a king. Centuries later, the Savior.
To develop: the reach of what looks like a small, ordinary act of obedience.
5. What You Do Today Rarely Ends With You
Support: Psalm 78:5–7 — telling the next generation
To develop: decisions of faithfulness as a legacy, not merely as a personal choice.
---
Practical Application
Name one decision you've been putting off that would affect far more people than just yourself.
When you make choices, keep the next generation of your household in mind.
Be faithful even when you can't see the outcome — Rahab never saw Bethlehem.
Write the decision down; what goes unrecorded tends to be lost.
---
Conclusion and Appeal
Rahab made a decision in Jericho. The echo of it reached a manger in Bethlehem.
Appeal: Challenge every person to make a decision today with an eye toward those who will come after them.
