Sermon Outline: Come to Me

Theme: Jesus' invitation to the weary

Base Text: Matthew 11:28-30

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

---

Introduction

Jesus doesn't invite the strong. He invites the weary. This is one of the rare passages where He describes His own heart — and what it reveals is gentleness. Before He asks anything of us, He offers rest.

---

1. The Invitation — "Come to me"

  • Supporting verse: Matthew 11:28a
  • The invitation is personal: it's not "come to a religion" or "come to a doctrine" — it's to me.
  • Notice who is invited: "all." There is no filter based on merit.
  • To develop: contrast with the burdens the Pharisees placed on people (Matthew 23:4).
  • 2. The Condition — "all you who are weary and burdened"

  • Supporting verse: Matthew 11:28b
  • Two kinds of weight: the weariness of those who labor hard (active) and the burden placed on those who carry what others have loaded on them (passive).
  • Acknowledging weariness is the first step; many never come to Christ because they pretend they're fine.
  • To develop: illustration of someone carrying unnecessary weight.
  • 3. The Exchange — "Take my yoke upon you"

  • Supporting verse: Matthew 11:29
  • Jesus doesn't promise the absence of a yoke — He promises a different kind of yoke.
  • A yoke was shared between two animals: following Christ means walking alongside Him, not alone.
  • To develop: the difference between religion (a burden) and relationship (an easy yoke).
  • 4. The Promise — "you will find rest for your souls"

  • Supporting verse: Matthew 11:29b-30
  • The rest He offers is not about circumstances — it's rest for the soul.
  • It is possible to have inner rest in the middle of a busy life.
  • To develop: connection with Hebrews 4:9-11.
  • ---

    Practical Application

  • Identify the specific burden you are carrying right now.
  • Distinguish between what God has placed on you and what you have taken on yourself.
  • Go to Christ before you go to any other solution.
  • Learn from Him: gentleness is the path to rest.
  • ---

    Conclusion and Altar Call

Christ is still extending the same invitation today. He doesn't ask you to fix your weariness before you come — He asks you to come as you are, weary and all.

Altar call: invite those who are overwhelmed to surrender their burden to God in prayer, right where they are.
